Noise and Wobble

MECHANICAL

Noise and wobble

Stop the fan if movement is severe, the ceiling mount shifts, a blade is damaged, or any part contacts the guard or ceiling.

Safety: Turn off power at the wall switch and circuit breaker before opening the canopy, touching wiring, or removing electrical parts. Use a licensed electrician when electrical work is required.

QUICK CHECK

Follow these steps in order

01
Turn power off and wait for a full stop.
Do not touch moving blades or guards.
02
Check the ceiling mount and canopy.
The mounting bracket and electrical box must be secure and rated for a ceiling fan.
03
Tighten accessible hardware.
With power off, check blade screws, blade arms, guard fasteners, light-kit screws and decorative covers.
04
Inspect every blade.
Look for damage, warping, missing weights, reversed installation, or unequal blade-to-ceiling distance.
05
Check clearances.
Make sure wires, cables, pull chains, decorative parts and guards do not touch rotating components.
06
Test one speed at a time.
After safe reassembly, observe from low to high speed and record when the noise or wobble begins.

WHAT THE RESULT MEANS

Next step

A rhythmic click usually points to a rotating part or repeated contact. A hum without rotation may be electrical or motor-related. Balancing should be attempted only after the mount and all fasteners are confirmed secure.
